In a groundbreaking move aimed at fostering healthcare innovation and self-reliance across Africa and other developing regions, the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) has announced a collaboration with SPARK GLOBAL to empower local African scientists. The two organizations will jointly host the SPARK Translational Research Bootcamp and Conference in Abuja, Nigeria, from February 2 – 6, 2026. The event will also mark the launch of the SPARK Nigeria Program.

This annual event will bring together top scientists and researchers from across African universities and research institutes. The goal is to offer comprehensive training and foster collaborations using the SPARK translational research model, a framework designed to bridge the gap between basic scientific discoveries and their practical applications in healthcare.

The bootcamp and conference will provide a platform for participants to develop critical skills, interact with industry leaders, and collaborate on solutions to address the unique health challenges faced by African countries. By doing so, the initiative will contribute to the development of local research capacity and the creation of self-sustaining, innovation-driven ecosystems in the African healthcare sector.

The launch of the SPARK program in Nigeria aligns with the Nigerian government's strategic priorities to advance research and development in the life sciences, pharmaceuticals, and related sectors. This effort will strengthen the value chain in healthcare delivery and support national health reforms.

Key Objectives of the SPARK Translational Research Bootcamp and Conference:

  • Education and Training: Provide intensive training to African scientists and researchers in translational research.
  • Closing the Gap: Address the gap between basic scientific research and its practical applications through enhanced research capacity and collaboration.
  • Networking Opportunities: Facilitate networking and collaboration among stakeholders, scientists, and key facilitators in the innovation ecosystem.
  • Training of SPARK Africa Directors: Equip SPARK Africa Directors to establish SPARK Centers in host institutions across the continent.
  • Promoting Science and R&D in Africa: Leverage emerging policies to drive the prioritization of science, research, and development across the continent.

Dr. Obi Peter Adigwe, Director-General of NIPRD, emphasized that the initiative aims to enhance research and development (R&D) capacity to tackle prevalent diseases across Africa. He also highlighted the importance of fostering Pan-African collaboration to support the development of sustainable socioeconomic models embedded in the healthcare value chain. The event will create a robust network for knowledge-sharing and the development of evidence-based solutions to local health challenges.
